Afrique du sud, Comores, Madagascar, Mozambique, Tanzanie
Présent dans le canal du Mozambique, de l'Afrique australe aux Comores.

Connue sous le nom de "fossile vivant", cette espèce est présente dans l'Indo-Ouest Pacifique, à proximité des îles de Grandes Comores et d'Anjouan, sur la côte de l'Afrique du Sud, à Madagascar et au Mozambique.

Etymologie : Latimeria, en l'honneur de Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer, et chalumnae, du lieu de sa "découverte" en 1938, vers l'estuaire de la rivière Chalumna en Afrique du Sud.
